Adding distiller's grains and molasses on fermentation quality of rice straw silages Ciência Rural
Yuan,XianJun; Dong,ZhiHao; Desta,Seare Tajebe; Wen,AiYou; Zhu,Xiaoxuan; Rong,Ting; Shao,Tao.
ABSTRACT: Ensilage is a simple and low-cost strategy to enable long term preservation and environmentally friendly utilization of agricultural by-products, such as straws and distiller's grains (DG) for ruminants. Effect of mixing different proportions of DG and rice straw (i.e. 0, 10, 20 or 30% of DG) with or without 5% molasses addition on fermentation and chemical variables of silages was evaluated. The study was conducted as a randomized blocks design in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement, with three replications, using laboratory silos of 1L capacity (n=24). Despite a significant interaction (P<0.01) between DG and molasses addition was observed for most variables, in general the increased addition of DG linearly decreased the pH value, acetic acid...

Dynamics of change in fermentation and fatty acid profiles in high moisture alfalfa silage during ensiling at different temperatures Ciência Rural
Liu,Qinhua; Dong,Zhihao; Shao,Tao.
ABSTRACT: The objective of present study was to investigate the dynamics of change in fermentation and fatty acid profiles in high moisture (DM=232g/kg FW) alfalfa silages during ensiling at 45°C, 30°C and 15°C. After ensiling for 1, 3, 7, 21, 39 and 65 days, silages was sampled and examined. Lactic fermentation changing into butyric fermentation in silage ensiled at 30°C and 45°C occurred on ensiling for 21 and 65 days, respectively, as accompanied with high ammonia-N content ( >150g/kg N), which subsequently resulted in a sudden increase of pH (P < 0.05). In contrast, the increase of lactic acid content was observed in silage ensiled at 15°C during ensiling for 65 days (P<0.05). As the ensiling temperature rose, considerable losses in total FA,...

Effect of different levels of alpha tocopherol on performance traits, serum antioxidant enzymes, and trace elements in Japanese quail ( Coturnix coturnix japonica ) under low ambient temperature R. Bras. Zootec.
Shah,Assar Ali; Khan,Muhammad Saleem; Khan,Sarzamin; Ahmad,Nazir; Alhidary,Ibrahim A.; Khan,Rifat Ullah; Shao,Tao.
ABSTRACT This study was designed to find the effect of vitamin E supplementation on growth, serum antioxidant enzymes, and some trace elements in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) under low ambient temperature. A total of 180 day-old Japanese quails were randomly divided into four groups and provided with 0 (group A), 50 (group B), 100 (group C), and 150 IU/kg (group D) vitamin E (dl-α-tocopherol acetate) under an average temperature of 9±0.5 °C for an experimental period of 42 days. The result showed that feed intake per day, body weight, weight gain per day, and feed conversion ratio did not differ significantly between the groups. Serum concentrations of superoxide and glutathione peroxidase were significantly high in birds supplemented with...

Efficient expression and characterization of a cold-active endo-1, 4-β-glucanase from Citrobacter farmeri by co-expression of Myxococcus xanthus protein S Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Bai,Xi; Yuan,Xianjun; Wen,Aiyou; Li,Junfeng; Bai,Yunfeng; Shao,Tao.
Background: Cold-active endo-1, 4-β-glucanase (EglC) can decrease energy costs and prevent product denaturation in biotechnological processes. However, the nature EglC from C. farmeri A1 showed very low activity (800 U/L). In an attempt to increase its expression level, C. farmeri EglC was expressed in Escherichia coli as an N-terminal fusion to protein S (ProS) from Myxococcus xanthus. Results: A novel expression vector, pET(ProS-EglC), was successfully constructed for the expression of C. farmeri EglC in E. coli. SDS-PAGE showed that the recombinant protein (ProS-EglC) was approximately 60 kDa. The activity of ProS-EglC was 12,400 U/L, which was considerably higher than that of the nature EglC (800 U/L). ProS-EglC was active at pH 6.5-pH 8.0,...

Utilization of a novel feedstuff: effects of additives on the fermentation characteristics, chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of tetraploid black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) silage Ciência Rural
Dong,Zhihao; Li,Junfeng; Chen,Lei; Wang,Siran; Shao,Tao.
ABSTRACT: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of additives on the fermentation characteristics, chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of tetraploid black locust (TBL). The TBL leaves silage was either untreated (control) or treated with 1 × 106 cfu/g FM Lactobacillus plantarum (L), 1% glucose (G), 3% molasses (M), a combination of 1% glucose and Lactobacillus plantarum (L+G), or a combination of 3% molasses and Lactobacillus plantarum (L+M). Fermentation quality, chemical composition and nutrient digestibility were then analyzed. Ethanol and acetic acid concentrations were the dominant fermentation products in all silages except L+M silage. The L, G and L+G treatments failed to influence the fermentation. The M treatment increased...
